The objective of the panel will be to explore the notion of ‘design’ in the context of contemporary software development practices (such as SDL and UX design, focusing in specific ‘by design’ paradigms, such as pseudonymisation, data minimisation and (privacy) default settings.

In the light of GDPR and the EC proposal for an ePrivacy regulation, the panel aims at exploring the modern online tracking techniques and their impact on user profiling and micro-targeting. In particular, the discussion will focus on the legal and technical safeguards that are or can be put in place to protect users of online services against tracking and profiling and especially the role of privacy settings and relevant privacy-enhancing tools.
